Lesson 10: Wear what you want to wear
Believe it or not. I love fashion. I am passionate about my fashion sense because I believe that fashion is something that gives someone their own unique sense of individuality. The concept of something being fashionable is interesting to me, in order for something to be fashionable I believe that most people would agree that society has to influence and accept your outfit. With that being said I don’t think that you should base what you wear off of what society expects you to wear.
My fashion sense is all over the place but most of it revolves around striped button downs, thrifted button downs, graphic tees, jeans, and khakis with some kind of loafer or sneaker. It is not super complex but most of what I wear has either a blue or black in it. I enjoy waking up every morning and picking out an outfit based on my mood for the day.
There is nothing more liberating than getting a compliment on an outfit you took time thinking about. It is such a great feeling. I make sure to always go out of my way to compliment someone who I can tell put a lot of time into an outfit. Chances are what they are wearing makes them feel good, and a simple compliment goes a long way. So I challenge you this week, go out of your way to compliment someone, one simple random act of kindness can go a long way. In many instances it can set off a chain reaction where the person who receives the complement, compliments a different person.
Dressing up is something that most reserve for special occasions but for me, I like to dress up on random days during the week, because why not. ‘Why not’ is the answer that I give to so many people when they stop me and ask why I am so dressed up. Not in a snarky way but more of a thought provoking way, make them think about it. Everyday that I dress up I am more productive, confident, and ambitious. It doesn’t have to be anything crazy, even just a simple pair of khakis and a floral button down can do the job. And if wearing a pair of sweatpants and a t shirt is something that makes you happy then wear it, wear whatever you want as long as it makes you happy.
I can’t stress how important it is to make sure that you are the person who dictates your fashion sense. It’s ultra important. So many times, as other ‘people watchers’ can attest to, I can learn a lot about a person based on what they are wearing. Usually louder, more eccentric colors indicate a more outgoing person and darker, more dull colors indicate someone who might be more reserved. But there is not definite science to this, just small cues I have picked up so far in life.
If you ever want to throw around some ideas you might have about fashion feel free to reach out to me, always an interesting conversation. Always remember to wear what you feel like wearing despite how you think your peers will react to it, be confident and never look back.
